De Stijl Piet Mondrian, Ohne Titel,1872 - 1944 The De Stijl began in 1917 and lasted in 1931. It was founded by a group of artists, but the two artists that stood out was Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg. The De stjil movement was about a Utopian perception of spiritual harmony. It was an advocate of pure abstraction. the paintings were purely abstract, but the point of emphasis that separated this from cubism is that there is this kind universalized reduction to just the essentials of form and color. These paintings are very simple. it consists of primarily of just vertical and horizontal lines. Basic shapes like squares rectangles and the use of primary colors.
