Arts and Craft Movement

William Morris (1834 - 1896)
Trellis 1862 (pencil and water colour sketch for wallpaper design)

When mass production had come along traditional means of making products had faded away. Due to the development of technology many people had lost touch with their creative side. The arts and craft movement, which took place in the 1880s, was a rebellion against mass production. Influencial designers such as William Morris promoted economic and social reform. Morris was interested in seeing craftmanship in products. In his company, Morris and Co, he created wallpaper, furniture etc. During the movement most of the craft were of floral and nature related imagery as a source of reference. Inspired my the flora and forna of British countryside.
